Why Backflow Testing Is Required Annually

A backflow preventer is a mechanical device that stops water from flowing backward from your property into the public water supply. This matters because irrigation systems, pools, and certain commercial connections create the risk of contaminated water — fertilizers, pesticides, pool chemicals — being siphoned back into the clean municipal water system if pressure drops unexpectedly.
California requires annual testing of installed backflow preventers to confirm they are functioning correctly. Your water district typically mails a testing notice when it comes due, but the responsibility for scheduling and completing the test falls entirely on the property owner — missing the deadline can result in water service restrictions until compliance is restored.
